- In 24p mode the shadow detail is impressive with little or any hue shift apparent in brightly saturated objects, a familiar problem with DV. 24p (really 480p) has substantially better resolution than conventional NTSC. Progressively scanned images eliminate the temporal artifacts that may occur between fields (a major factor in better resolution).
- Shooters have the option of recording conventional interlaced footage at 60i or in one of three progressive modes. 1) 30 frame progressive (30p), 24p standard - images captured progressivley at 24 fps. The 24 fps video stream is subsequently converted to a 60 field interlaced signal using a conventional 3:2 pulldown scheme. The resulting video is then output to mini DV tape for editing on 30 fps systems. 3) 24p advanced mode images are scanned progressively at 24 fps but the conversion to 60i is handeled differently. Here the frames recorded originally in 24p are restored in the NLE by weeding out the extra frames added in the telecine process. This can be done in a soon to be released Final Cut Pro (Nov 02). Not only can you output to 16/35mm but every DVD player by default is a 24p playback device. Authors have been encoding feature films at 24 fps for some time and relying on the DVD player to perform the required 3:2 pulldown for NTSC display. Encoding at 24p also reduces the size by 20%
